Course Content

The programme will provide the healthcare assistant with the essential knowledge and skills required for ensuring that all aspects of care are carried out in a safe and effective way and that the above standards are incorporated into everyday practice.

The induction period will comprise of a one -day classroom based programme on basic care skills to enable HCA to demonstrate the acquisition of appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes required to carry out the role.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of the programme healthcare assistants will be able to:

  • Describe the role and responsibilities of the healthcare assistant
  • Discuss the importance of respect, attitudes, behaviour, communication, privacy and dignity when caring for patients and service users
  • Reflect upon the principles of patient confidentiality and individual patient and service users needs
  • Explore clear communication and a positive attitude within the healthcare team
  • Outline Trust policies on consent, record keeping and documentation, observation and reporting
  • Recognise the signs of abuse and describe the protocol for recording and reporting same
  • Outline the principles of safe practice in personal hygiene, eating and drinking and elimination
  • Demonstrate the principles of infection control and prevention
  • Demonstrate the principles of safe patient handling
  • Demonstrate cardiopulmonary resuscitation through simulated practice
